Best Thing We Ate: Brunch at Semi Sweet BakeryBy Lesley Balla

Do you know what love is? It's not just a McFong Breakfast Sandwich - bacon, cheese and egg on a buttery chive biscuit - at Semi Sweet Bakery, which is definitely something special. It's a McFong Breakfast Sandwich in the shape of a heart. We don't know if it was on purpose or sheer accident, but that's love. This is just one of the items on the newish weekend brunch menu at the small Downtown LA bakery, one of our favorites for Ding-a-Lings, maple-bacon sticky buns, triple-chip cookies and pastry chef Sharlena Fong's faux-cronut creation, the Crullant. When the lines at Nickel Diner around the corner are too long, and it's too early for French dips at Cole's across the street, the egg and French toast (oh goodness is it good) offerings are just right. The breakfast sandwich is quite hearty, especially for the wallet-friendly price of only $4.75. But get there early on the weekends or you might miss your chance to take home some of the baked goods: they were almost sold out when we slipped in on Sunday.
