Paul Hibler is a power player for a reason. His American Gonzo Food Corporation is moving full speed ahead with more Pitfire Artisan Pizzas on the way (Pasadena opening this spring...with booze!); East Borough, the Vietnamese-inspired concept coming to Culver City; and more Superba-branded concepts. First up is Superba Food & Bread, a new bakery and cafe set to open on Lincoln Boulevard in Venice this February, and the big news is that that chef Jason Travi will be leading the kitchen, with Superba Snack Bar's Jason Neroni consulting. Travi has been on the LA scene for years, making his big mark at places like Spago, La Terza and Fraiche, and most recently at Littlefork in Hollywood, where his lobster roll and clams casino are tops.
Food & Bread will serve artisanal breads and fresh scones, pain au chocolat and other pastries, coffee, teas and other morning items in the cafe. The lunch menu will feature sandwiches like pastrami and Swiss, fresh salads with local ingredients and grains, and more. Dinner is comfort food with a California twist, things like pierogies, smoked turkey pot pie, and pot roast with root vegetables. For dessert, rhubarb pie with hyssop cream, root beer floats with malted ice cream, and butterscotch custard with sea salt. Weekend brunch will see dishes like brown rice with kimchi and fried eggs, and gingerbread pancakes with spiced pears. Similar to the popular Red Bread Bakery, the rye, sourdough and Pullman breads will also be available for delivery to Venice locals by bike.
The space, a former El Pollo Loco, is getting reworked by the firm Design, Bitches, which is responsible for the look of Superba Snack Bar and the brick-and-mortar locations of Coolhaus. For a sneak peek, there's a little time-lapse video of the work being done at Food & Bread on the website.
