Start the New Year's countdown with a free wine tasting at Bar Covell tonight. Sample three wines from Spain's Ribera del Duero region and glasses are $12 after that. 5-7 PM.
Tuesday, December 31
It’s New Year’s Eve - go forth and party like it's the end of 2013! If you haven't planned where to eat yet, here are some dining options. Tip: try the earlier seatings for last-minute reservations.
Wednesday, January 1
Kick off the new year with a big brunch - there are plenty of places open and serving weekend-only menus today. In addition, M.B. Post also will open for pecan sticky buns, chimichangas, and poached eggs with tomato and white bean stew. If you're headed to Pasadena for the Rose Parade, the Dog Haus Biergarten (a block away from the parade route) has The Hangover special, a burger topped with chili, cheese, bacon and a fried egg, plus a brown-bag PBR for $10. And before you hit the Cheesecake Factory or one of the other chain restaurants, do try one of the local spots instead, even mini chains like Umami Burger, Tender Greens and Urth Caffe will likely open after the parade crowds disperse.
Thursday, January 2
Now is the day to cleanse. Both Cafe Gratitude Hancock Park and Venice have the I Am Resolved bowl today, a heap of black-eyed peas, locally-grown brown rice, pureed garnet yams and citrus collard greens. It's comes free to anyone who gets one of the I Am Cleansed packages ($80-$350); otherwise it's $13.
Friday, January 3
You cleansed for a day, now celebrate your success with a happy hour at The Backyard, the poolside restaurant and bar at the W Hotel in Westwood. From 4-7 PM, Monday through Friday, sliders (short-rib, sirloin or albacore) are $4, basic to craft beers are $3-$4, wines by the glass are $5, and cocktails are $6.
Saturday, January 4
The Irish Coffee is back! Or at least partially. New owners are looking to reopen Tom Bergin’s today with a limited food menu and regular offerings. Whiskey, beer and coffee is all you really need anyway.
Sunday, January 5
Every Sunday is Fat Sunday at Acabar. A four-course menu is always available at the Cru seafood bar for $40 per person, and live music from jazz to samba takes over the stage in the lounge. The regular menu is also available, as are drinks at the bar. 6-10:30 PM, the bar and lounge are open until 2 AM.
