Mendocino Farms for National Sandwich DayBy Lesley Balla

With National Sandwich Day on the horizon - it's Sunday, November 3 - we turn to one of the fastest-growing local sandwich stars, Mendocino Farms. Always in the top 10 for sandwiches in the Zagat Restaurant Survey, the mini chain owned by Mario del Pero, Ellen Chen and chef partner Judy Han, is the place to go for some creative concoctions often made with local and organic (when they can) ingredients. The company just opened its seventh location in Sherman Oaks last month and at Figat7th this past spring, which were on the heels of opening the biggest store at Fairfax and Third last year. And more are slated for Ventura, Santa Monica and Costa Mesa, among other cities for next year.
While menu mainstays like the kurobuta pork belly banh mi and Drunken Goat grilled cheese are super good, pay close attention to the seasonal and even weekly specials. Right now there's a spicy Peruvian turkey cemitas at all locations, seared turkey white meat tossed in house-made yellow "Rooster" sauce with cilantro, red onion slaw and smashed avocado on a Drago Bakery cemitas bun. It's November; everything's coming up turkey. Get the special through next week.
