Briana Valdez's HomeState is an early homerun in Los Feliz. The Tex-Mex breakfast and lunch spot opened earlier this week with breakfast tacos, Frito pie and more in the former Storefront Deli space. It's cheery, there's coffee and Frito pie. Come on.

Plan Check debuts its second location on Fairfax today. Open daily at 11:30 AM, with happy hour and a late-night menu (till 1 AM during the week and 2 AM on the weekends), it will offer all the familiar favorites, including smoky fried chicken, burgers and housemade pickles. And - bonus! - at this location you can expect cocktails from barman Matt Biancaniello, which means wacky creations made with arugula and truffle salt, all served alongside the requisite craft beers and wines.

Tonight Jimmy Shaw adds another Loteria Grill to his belt, plus Torta Co., which he co-owns with brother Andrew. The Loteria will be more like the original at the Farmers Market vs. the larger restaurants in Hollywood, Studio City or Santa Monica, with tacos, enchiladas, chilaquiles and more. The Torta Co. is slinging Mexican sandwiches stuffed with chorizo with Oaxaca cheese, breaded chicken, pulled pork, turkey in mole, and more. There's a big to-do tonight with live music and food and drink sampling, and then it's open to the public after 9 PM. The two open at TASTE at Figat7th in Downtown LA.

And for something sweet, mini meringue and whipped cream cakes in a variety of flavors are now available at Bo Nuage on Melrose.
