Now Open: Valerie Echo ParkBy Lesley Balla

Not everyone would open two new breakfast and lunch spots within a couple of months of each other, but Valerie Gordon and Stan Weightman Jr. pulled it off. Their newest Valerie cafe opened this week, taking over the former Delilah Bakery space in Echo Park and bringing the neighborhood a slew of new sweet and savory items, plus coffee, tea and, of course, jams, toffees and chocolates. The space has been spruced up with counter service, a few tables and benches inside, and probably outdoor seating. Gordon told us earlier this year that while the new outpost at the Grand Central Market focuses on classic coffee shop food and desserts (like this amazing crunch cake), the new cafe is more of an offshoot of the Valerie at the stalls you see at the Hollywood and Santa Monica farmer's markets.
The menu changes with the seasons, but you'll find things like onion marmalade or fruit galettes, soft scrambled eggs with fine herbs, smoked salmon and avocado tartines, fresh salads and more. There's coffee, but you'll find a bigger focus on tea. "We've been doing petit fours and afternoon tea catering for years," says Gordon. "So in addition to the sweets, our savory dishes will have tea as an ingredient or will pair well with tea." The cafe is open Wednesday through Sunday, 7 AM-5 PM.
