Urth Caffe's Lattes, Breakfast, Pie Now in PasadenaBy Lesley Balla | October 3, 2013 By Lesley Balla | October 3, 2013
After five years of planning, the fifth outpost of Urth Caffe has finally opened in Pasadena's Playhouse District. It's not entirely bad news for Zona Rossa Caffe, which is literally next door to the Pasadena Playhouse a block away, since right now Urth is only open 6 AM-4 PM daily (Zona Rossa is as much a nighttime hang as daytime), but it is a good addition to the neighborhood, especially since it has a full breakfast and lunch menu, in addition to teas, coffees, fresh-baked pastries and desserts. The space is lovely, with tall ceilings, Spanish-style arches and colorful hand-painted tiles. While the second floor isn't for customers as previously believed, there are three different patio areas - two front the cafe on the street, another in an alcove with umbrella-ed tables - plus seats inside. It wasn't too crowded when we swung by this morning, but the crowds already have surged on some mornings. We imagine weekday lunch and weekend brunch will be a huge draw, just as with the other locations around town. Pasadena is the next big thing for local chains: Urth joins Lemonade, Tender Greens, which is right across the street, Umami, Intelligentsia and Coolhaus. What's next, Pizzeria Mozza? Oh...dare to dream. Take a look around the new cafe below.
