Weekend Planner: Sinatra Specials, Santas and Sweets
It's beginning to taste a lot like Christmas...and Sinatra. Here are some festive happenings this weekend.
Celebrating Frank Sinatra: Frank Sinatra would've turned 100 this year, and some of his favorite old LA haunts are remembering him in their own special way. On Saturday, Dec. 12, at the longstanding La Dolce Vita in Beverly Hills, of which ol' Blue Eyes was a fan, there will be a prix fixe menu of his personal favorite dishes, things like clams steamed in tomato garlic and oregano, veal Milanese, tiramisu and more ($75). There will also be a cocktail made with Jack Daniel's rare Sinatra Select bourbon for $50 and complimentary pours of the whiskey at 9 PM to toast the man. Stop here before hearing Frank Junior perform at the Saban Theater nearby.
Santa Monica Pub Crawl: If you like drinking with thousands of people in Santa costumes, the annual pub crawl is just the ticket. On Saturday, Dec. 12, Santa Monica's best bars and restaurants will be descended upon by reindeers, elves and many Santas and Mrs. Clauses all out looking for booze and food deals. Wristbands to participate cost $12, with proceeds going to the Westside Food Bank (last year it raised $20,000). Pick your route, including along Wilshire Boulevard, The Pier, The Promenade and Main Street, and have a ball. Remember: Don't drink and drive. Festivities begin at 5 PM. Get all info here.
Sips & Sweets: Now in its second year, the annual LA Weekly holiday party features more than 20 of the city's top bakers, plus cocktails and crafts. Taking place at the Reef in Downtown LA, major barmen and women will be there from places like Corazon y Miel, Osso, Broken Spanish, Faith & Flower and so many more, plus confections from Craft, BLD, Hatchet Hall and more. Saturday, Dec. 12; 8-11 PM. Tickets are $40 for general admission and $60 for early-entry VIP. Get them here.
Gift Cake Decorating at Charm City Cakes West: Giving presents is one thing, but giving a cake in the shape of a perfectly wrapped present means serious brownie points for the holidays. Join Charm City Cakes decorator and Food Network of 'Cake Masters' cast member Alyssa as she walks you through the steps to create a sparkly holiday present cake. Students will receive their own pre-baked 6-inch chocolate cake filled and crumb-coated with vanilla buttercream and covered with vanilla fondant. You then get to make fondant bows, gift tags and more with edible paint and gold. Good for ages 8 and up. Sunday, Dec. 13, 2-3:30 PM. Tickets are $140 per person. Get them here.
