Where to Brunch Around LA This Weekend: Mercado

Just when you need a healthy dose of carnitas and Bloody Marys for brunch, the new Mercado on West Third Street kicks off its brunch service this Sunday, the first midday service for either location (the original Santa Monica outpost doesn't serve lunch or brunch). The menu is completely new, featuring dishes like tortilla soup; chorizo and egg tortas; chilaquiles topped with a heaping mound of carnitas; huevos a la Mexicana (scrambled with cilantro, tomatoes, and onions and served with lime rice and black beans); and this being LA, a kale salad with candied pepitas, pears, dried strawberries and cotija-coated croutons. To drink, there are chipotle Bloody Marys with house-pickled carrots and jicama, guava mimosas and Mezcal concoctions with pomegranate and passion fruit. This all goes down pretty easily in front of those big garage-door windows that open to the sidewalk on a sunny morning/afternoon. Brunch runs on Sundays only from 10 AM-4 PM.
