Your average Chinese hole-in-the-wall certainly serves its purpose - who doesn't crave a carton of General Tso's chicken and pork fried rice after a late-night drinking binge? However, we're pretty excited about the uptick in gourmet-style Chinese destinations popping up around town, serving the likes of lobster-stuffed egg rolls. Here are eight such spots you shouldn't miss.
The latest to hit the gourmet list, Sakaya Kitchen's chef Richard Hales recently opened this Midtown hot spot serving upscale Chinese in a funky industrial setting. Dishes range from daily-made house noodles with pork and sesame paste to seasonal vegetable and pork egg rolls with pumpkin sweet and sour sauce.

This Overtown space might be pick-up-only, but it's nothing like your average corner joint. Choose from fare like St. Louis pork ribs in a barbecue glaze and Chinese black garlic shrimp udon with lemon grass curry - they even sell lychee plum wine to take home too.

One of the most well-known fancy Chinese restaurants in town that sits pretty inside the Fontainebleau Miami Beach, has been providing its elite customers with plenty of unique Chinese cuisine inside an ultra-chic dining room. Items like Peking duck with Russian Osetra Caviar and stir-fry lobster with Chinese chive, pair perfectly with any one of this restaurant's signature sips including The Hakka made with vodka, sake, coconut and passion fruit.

Diners tend to go to this Chinese staple with open glass kitchen not only for its food making views, but also for its Hong Kong-style dim sum push cart. A few examples of some signature mouthwatering plates include pan grilled leek dumplings and braised fish fillet with ginger, scallion and shredded pork.

This space provides its diners with a gorgeous waterfront dining room and MSG free cuisine. The team here specializes in Hong Kong-style Cantonese cuisine which goes easy on the salt and oil so you won't feel as guilty when devouring the crispy quail marinated in soy pepper sauce or sliced abalone with sea cucumber simmered in a clay pot.

Kon Chau Chinese Restaurant
While this no-frills South Miami spot might have a casual vibe to its ambiance, the food is a bit more upscale and contemporary, playing with traditional oriental-style dishes and spicing them up a bit. Sure, you can find the classic chow mein and egg foo young plates but there are also some solid house specials like the shrimp with lobster sauce and diced ham.

Situated inside the W South Beach, this gorgeous space with lavish gold leaf crystal chandelier (designed by Michael Chow himself), this venue is the epitome of an upper class Chinese restaurant. You'll find Beijing-inspired cuisine that can't be found at your local greasy chain, like squid ink rice noodles, shrimp water dumplings and lamb shank on the bone.

Specializing in a slew of Chinese cuisine: Cantonese, Mandarin and Sichuan, this little nook is the place to go for decent gourmet-style grub on the cheap.
