Best Thing We Ate: Steak Tartare in a Jar

We've had plenty of spectacular steak tartare dishes in the past, but nothing with a presentation quite like the one at The Federal Food, Drink & Provisions. While tasting the new fall supper menu inside the Upper East Side venue, we got a chance to try the steak tartare in a jar made with quail egg, capers and chorizo powder.

When the server brought the jar over to our table we were told to keep the lid on for a few minutes to help "marinate" what's happening inside. Once the lid was off, a burst of hickory smoke seeped out into the air. We dug into the raw meat dish with the crispy golden chips paired on the side and was pleasantly surprised at how the smoke complimented the dish so well, emphasizing all of its rich flavors.

It really makes us think: perhaps steak tartare really is better in a jar.
