Best Thing We Ate: Fried Chicken Waffle Cone

Will waffle cones finally bust out of the ice cream parlor? We're sweet on the idea, having tasted this phenomenal combination by The Brooklyn Star, which only sells its fried chicken cones at events (but does serve chicken and waffles at brunch, as well as fried chicken dinners Sunday-Monday). We had the chance to indulge at Crest Hardware's 4th Annual Pumpkin Carving contest, hosted by the Williamsburg shop in its sizable, festive backyard, which was equipped with all the essentials: a DJ booth, a bar and a fryer.

Since the waffle cone came with a fork, we managed to avoid starting off with a total face plant. Topped with bacon buttermilk dressing and hot sauce, the richly flavorful fried chicken had its own kick (we were told that it's only dredged in flour, salt and pepper, so the secret's in the buttermilk brine). Chipping off pieces of the buttery, not-too-sweet cone, we worked our way down to the next layer - crisp, spicy slaw - and finally to mashed potatoes at the end, softening the remaining waffle. (Time to toss the fork.) It was a journey through all the food groups - fried, spicy, crunchy and mashed - and though this one will be tough to beat, we can't wait for our next meal in a cone.
