Booze Beat: Free Spirits Tastings & Winter Beer FestBy Billy Lyons

Though we know it can be unbearable to leave the house when each day brings about a new low (temperature wise), we admit complimentary tastings are pretty hard to pass up. Singl, a lounge near Union Square, is helping fight the winter chill with free spirit tastings throughout the remainder of January. The upscale bar's Beverage Director and Master Sommelier Roger Dahorn will be discussing Glenfiddich single malt scotch whiskey on January 14, while the tasting on January 21 will cover a limited-edition aged rum courtesy of Bacardi. The final Tuesday of January will conclude the series by toasting a glass of Woodford Reserve Bourbon, and those interested in attending any of the tastings can reserve in advance by calling the bar (212-432-1324).
For those looking for drinks that are specially seasoned for the cold, Loreley is hosting its first ever winter beer festival from January 18 to February 1. During the two week party, guests will be able to enjoy free beer on the first and final day of the festival, daily drink deals, and a three-course, seven beer tasting dinner at 7 PM on January 29. The festival will begin with complimentary cups of German brew Weihestephan Vitus and center around beers with a strong kick such as Einbecker Winter Bock and Hofbrau Delicator. Tickets for the beer dinner will be available for purchase on the restaurant's Web site (212-253-7077).
