In a sea of Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts, it's nice to know every once in awhile that rare breed of independent coffee shop can surface in the most unlikely of places. Artisanal beanery Ground Central Coffee Company is currently open in Midtown and offers plenty of seating for conversation - or just sprawling out with your laptop.
Partner Etienne Wiik, whose coffee credentials range from opening a cafe in Paris to running his own coffee company, focuses on hard-to-find blends like La Colombe's Fishtown, and offers anything from cold brew to pour overs. He's also brought in Jason Wood, formerly of Marlow & Son, to oversee the non-caffeinated items available. Sandwiches include beet salad with goat cheese, arugula and walnut crema on ciabatta ($8) and poached chicken with curry mayo and slaw ($11). There are also macarons, cheddar chive biscuits and gluten-free scones to dunk as you please. And one of the best treats of all - the soundtrack won't feature an endless repetitive collection of holiday jingles, since there's a vintage sound system with a lineup of Led Zeppelin and The Ramones to accompany your double shot cappuccino buzz.
