'Tis the season of Mexican restaurant openings - from Stephen Starr's El Vez to East Village newcomer Black Ant, to Fonda Chelsea which will open this week, there's been a slew of South-of-the-border eateries popping up of late. Check out the lowdown on this latest opening below.
The gist: Chef Manuel Trevino and ESquared Hospitality have retooled the BLT Burger space into this Mexican newcomer which combines authentic regional dishes with American and Tex-Mex-inspired favorites.
The space: The 60-seat space features exposed brick, distressed tin ceilings, a reclaimed wood bar and is adorned with traditional Mexican tschotskes, cultural icons and art installations. Two long communal tables offer seating as well as cozy booths that line the walls. Edison bulbs hang overhead and walls are decorated with one-of-a-kind hand-drawn murals by New York-based artist RJ Raizke.
The food: The menu features a variety of takes on both regional dishes and American/Tex-Mex favorites created by chef Manuel Trevino, formerly of Dos Caminos and Dream Downtown. Expect dishes like shareable guacamoles (like Guacamole con Chorizo y Queso), salsas and ceviche, small plates, fresh salads, a variety of tacos and quesadillas (pork belly, tuna, and more), large format main dishes (like banana leaf Mahi Mahi). The drinks: Some of the drinks on offer include classic Mexican sodas, aguas frescas, spiked Horchatas, fresh frozen margaritas, flights of rare and small-batch tequilas and mezcals, a selection of wine and beer, and a rotating collection of seasonal cocktails. Cocktail selections include The Funky Monkey Signature Horchata: horchata, Malibu rum, Stoli Vanilla, Kahlua; meyer lemon and yuzu, the Papi Chulo: Gran Centenario anejo, crème de cacao, Ramazotti Amaro, pineapple, lime, ginger beer, and a selection of margaritas.
