Philly Rising Star at City Grit
New York is capable of supplying countless chefs qualified to cook at City Grit’s kitchen, but the culinary salon (above) is kicking off 2014 by spotlighting talented chefs around the country. First up is Philadelphia with a dinner by chef Nick Elmi, who recently opened Laurel. The 7:30 p.m. feast ($85) includes generous servings of dishes like roasted cod and gnocchi. Other cities to be featured include Nashville and Richmond. Get tickets here.

Book Signing With Brooklyn's Cupcake Champs
Say what you want about cupcakes, but one of the sweetest stories arising from this mega food trend is the endearing story of Allison and Matt Robicelli. Their legions of fans finally got a cookbook -Robicelli’s: A Love Story, With Cupcakes - this year, and now the couple behind the Brooklyn bakery share their behind-the-scenes story at the Mid-Manhattan Library, 455 Fifth Avenue, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. It’s sure to be funny and sweet.

Master the Art of Rugelach
Pickles, pastrami and Jewish pastries have a long history in the Lower East Side. At the Museum at Eldridge Street, two instructors will begin leading a workshop ($20 per person) on how to make
rugelach each third Wednesday of the month from 11 AM to noon. Students can learn how to make the crescent-shaped treats - filled with everything from cinnamon, fruit and chocolate - and take tours of the Eldridge Street Synagogue while their rugelach bake. Space is limited, so RSVP online or call 212-219-0888, extension 5.

Oyster Happy Hour at Rock Center
The tree is gone and more importantly, (most) of the gawking tourists have emptied out around Rockefeller Center. To celebrate, head to The Sea Grill any weekday this month between 4:30 and 7:30 PM for an oyster happy hour. The deal? One-dollar oysters, $10 flutes of Champagne (or wine, if you must) and a special composed oyster dish. More info here.
