The 2013 Thanksgiving-Hanukkah mega-holiday may only come once in a lifetime, but this time of year always brings people together at the table. Whether you're looking for a magnificent spread or a down-home deal, there's something for everyone come November 28. Here's a look at some places to wine and dine with friends and family, no matter how many holidays you're celebrating.
For the Thanksgivukkah Fan: It's the best of both worlds at Barbounia, where the Festival of Lights meets not-so-light eating. Chef Mor, who grew up in Israel and immigrated to the U.S., will serve dishes to reflect his interpretation of this unique day, including sweet potato latkes and challah stuffing. The hybrid holiday menu will be available all day beginning at 12 PM, along with the restaurant's regular menu (212-995-0242).
For the Do-Gooder: Bubby's is offering a "pay-what-you-wish" feast from 5 PM to 11 PM, with 25% of proceeds going to support NYC Rescue Mission. Family-style turkey, sides like candied yams and green bean casserole, and a selection of the restaurant's popular pies are all included. The meal will be served at both the TriBeCa and Meatpacking District locations, and a contribution of $60 is suggested. If you plan on staying at home and need dessert, to-go pie orders ($40 each) can be placed up until Friday November 22, with pickup available November 25-27 (Meatpacking: 212-206-2600; TriBeCa: 212-219-0666).
For the Italian Aficionado: Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria plays host to an Italian-style Thanksgiving from 2 PM to 9 PM. Though you can go with a traditional roasted turkey course, non-traditional dishes like gnocchi, baccalà and pumpkin gelato are also available. Dinner ($85 per person) includes an antipasto course and sides like pork sausage stuffing served family-style (212-837-2622).
For Spice Lovers: OBAO is offering customers a chance to enjoy Thanksgiving, Southeast-Asian style. Turkey with a curry spice and even Thai pastrami meatballs will grace the $31 prix fixe menu. There's also a Vietnamese salad and stuffed galbi short rib available, with poached pear in Thai ice tea and vanilla ice cream finishing off the meal (212-308-5588).
For the History Buff: In tribute to the Plymouth Colony's famed Myles Standish, Todd English's Plaza Food Hall offers up a historically inspired meal. Selections like giblet gravy and apple-sage cornbread stuffing might just transport you back to 1620. However, if a member of your party is tired of living in the past, a selection of dishes including flatbread with bacon and a baked egg are available on a separate menu (212-986-9260).
For the Wallet-Conscious: If budget is on the brain, Casa Pomona is offering a special three-course prix fixe for $29. Select from a choice of Spanish-inspired dishes like roasted winter vegetables with sherry-pomegranate molasses vinaigrette, or kale salad with jamón serrano chips. The big bird even features a chorizo stuffing, and for an additional $20, wine and sherry pairings are included. Giving thanks is easy when you're looking at a more-than-reasonable dinner bill (212-362-3200).
For the Outer-Borough Host: Alobar is giving Queens diners an early Black Friday treat for $25. The restaurant is offering a bird to-go for those charged with bringing the goods to the table this year. Orders in addition to a roasted turkey with gravy come with sides of butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, whipped potatoes and cranberry stuffing. All orders can be placed by calling the restaurant directly by November 15. Pickup will take place the Wednesday before the holiday (718-752-6000).
For the Downtowner: There's no better time than a holiday weekend to stroll through the West Village, and Wallsé is pleasantly situated to take in the scene. Kurt Gutenbrunner's Austrian-influenced menu offers a European twist on the American holiday, with dishes like venison cooked two ways and spätzle on offer. For starters, chicken liver parfait with black truffles and smoked trout sets the tone for the distinctly Viennese meal. The three-course prix fixe dinner is $60 per person, with wine pairings for an additional $35 (212-352-2300).
For the Midtown Tourist: Whether you're traveling from afar or coming in on the train, The Sea Grill overlooking the ice-skating rink at Rockefeller Center is a beautiful way to take in the city. For the holiday, chef Yuhi Fujinaga is rolling out a special seafood entree featuring Nantucket bay scallops to provide an alternative to the traditional heritage turkey. There's also a hickory-smoked porked chop - though the main event will most likely be ice-skaters falling in front of your table. The special menu is $89 for adults and $35 for children. Skate rentals are not included, though the view you receive is undoubtedly priceless (212-332-7610).
For the Hipster Hotel Guest: Reynard's at the Wythe Hotel offers those using the holiday weekend as a vacation the chance to enjoy Williamsburg and fill up those skinny jeans. For $85, you get a four-course meal complete with a choice of grilled turkey, hunter-style rabbit or roasted striped bass as an entree. A selection of desserts like black pepper and honey ice cream will be available to share. Dinner service lasts from noon to 8 PM, and reservations can be made by calling the restaurant directly. Afterwards, head upstairs to The Ides and be thankful for an amazing view of the Manhattan skyline (718-460-8004).
For the DIY Type: Williamsburg's Marlow & Daughters offers home chefs the chance to showcase their skills with a local white and bronze turkey ($50). The naturally raised birds come in five weight classes ranging from 10 to 30 lbs., depending on your party size. Orders can be completed by phone or online, and customers can pick up their orders beginning on Sunday, November 24 (718-388-5700).
For the Big Spender: Whether you're seated in the main dining room or the lounge at Daniel, be prepared to enjoy a meal more extravagant than the pilgrims could have envisioned. For $175 per person in the main dining room ($145 in the lounge area and $80 for children 12 and under), the renowned chef's team will prepare a three-course meal inspired by the historic feast. Dinner service will take place from noon to 7 PM, and reservations can be made by phone (212-288-0033).
For the Buffet-Loving Big Spender: Villard Michel Richard (pictured) celebrates its first Thanksgiving with a grand buffet full of turkey, glazed ham and salmon, among other options. A variety of starters like chestnut soup and poached shrimp may start to fill you up, but you'll want to pace yourself to make it through this marathon dining experience. Not to be missed are chef Richard's desserts, such as pumpkin pie and his well-known Napoleon. The buffet is $115 per person (212-891-8100).
For the Oenophile: Master sommelier and owner Laura Maniec will provide a gorgeous pairing for turkey at Corkbuzz Wine Studio. In addition to the traditional bird, chef Phil Conlon's menu includes butternut squash soup and pumpkin bread pudding. While you can't take the wine home with you, a turkey sandwich to-go is included. Seatings are $125 per person/$40 for children under 12, and take place at 1 PM and 4 PM. For the Lazy Chef: If you're playing host in the city but don't have time to prepare, Dean & Deluca is taking care of everything except setting the table. The artisanal market is ready to ship out a 14-lb. bird that'll feed six to eight people, with truffle mashed potatoes, rainbow carrots and cream cheese biscuits filling in the box. Turkey gravy and a brioche dressing with andouille sausage round out the $265 package, which can be ordered online.
