Friday, January 10, will be the last day of business for the Chestnut Hill outpost of Metropolitan Bakery, which had provided Germantown Avenue with fresh-baked loaves, pastries and other specialty items for 15 years. However, proprietors Wendy Smith Born and James Barrett are not referring to the shutter as a closing, exactly - instead, they are moving the location of the enterprise.

Starting on Thursday, January 23, Metropolitan Bakery will have a Thursday-Friday-Saturday stand at the Chestnut Hill Farmer’s Market (8229 Germantown Ave., Bldg. D). Expect a similar array of breads, pastries and sweets at the stand, available for purchase each weekend “hopefully for another 15 years.” Other Metropolitan locations include the side-by-side flagship bakery and cafe in Rittenhouse, cafes in University City and at the Free Library, and a stand in Reading Terminal Market.
