Head brewer Scott Morrison is itching to get started. Although Barren Hill Tavern & Brewery isn’t yet ready to go, Morrison will begin work on the opening lineup on August 6. The first batches of Barren Hill beer should be ready three weeks later, before the end of the month.
Construction is still ongoing at the brewpub, which is going into the former General Lafayette Inn in Lafayette Hill, so look for Morrison’s first creations at Devil’s Den in South Philly and Manayunk’s Old Eagle Tavern - the two pubs also owned by Barren Hill proprietor Erin Wallace.
Expect a wide variety of styles on Barren Hill’s half dozen house lines. “Most brewpubs have a stable of standards that are always on tap,” Morrison says, “but not us. Our offerings will rotate constantly and be always changing. It’s the market trend - beer drinkers these days want a lot of different choices. If something turns out to be ultrapopular, we’ll rotate it in more often, but there will always be several new beers to try.”
