Cook and Shaker Coming to FishtownBy Danya Henninger | August 7, 2013 By Danya Henninger | August 7, 2013
Once a near no man’s land in culinary terms, the region north of Girard and east of Frankford is filling up with restaurants and bars. The latest addition to the neighborhood is Cook and Shaker, a craft beer and comfort food pub from White Dog Cafe alum Laura Viegas.
Situated at 2301 East Albert Street where Fishtown meets Kensington (the space was previously the dive bar Chug A Mug Pub), Cook and Shaker will have 55 seats in front of exposed brick walls and along a bar of reclaimed wood. Eight taps will pour at least one cider among other local crafts, and specialty cocktails made with fresh-squeezed juices will stay in the $8-$10 range. There will also be a karaoke machine. “This is a friendly place, where nobody will mind if you’re singing off-key,” says Viegas.
Viegas is an accomplished baker as well as chef (she recently traveled to New Zealand to consult on bakery projects), so expect hearty sandwiches along with snacks and entrees - everything $15 and under. On the opening menu, we’re especially looking forward to The Stack Sandwich - fried green tomatoes with bacon and pimento cheese.
Cook and Shaker will be open 3 PM-midnight, Monday-Friday and noon-midnight, Saturday-Sunday. An early fall opening is targeted.
