Daily Digestif: Star Stephen Starr, Onion Soup RecipeBy Danya Henninger | February 4, 2014 By Danya Henninger | February 4, 2014
Your daily roundup of Philly food tidbits
• TV Alert: Stephen Starr appears on Dangerous Grounds tonight, the show that follows La Colombe founder Todd Carmichael around the world as he searches out coffee. Buddakan Philadelphia is the setting for the cameo. The episode airs on the Travel Channel at 9 PM.
• Speaking of Stephen Starr, check him out in our national ranking of restaurant power groups. When we averaged the food scores of all the restaurants in each organization, Starr ended up with a 24.6, which is not bad at all. Puts him above Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Danny Meyer and Richard Melman, anyway.
• If you’ve lived in Philadelphia for a while, you might remember H.A. Winstons, the local chain that was the inspiration and model for today’s behemoths like T.G.I.Friday's and Houlihans. French onion soup was the signature dish of Winston’s, and to answer a reader’s question, Michael Klein unearthed the original recipe and shared it for everyone. (Spoiler: it starts with Lipton’s soup mix.)
• Tomorrow, Union Taco is celebrating Cinco de Febrero with a five tacos for $5 deal. Yes, it’s a totally made up holiday, but chef-owner Nick Farina didn’t want to wait until May, so he’s doing the five for $5 deal on the fifth of each month. Stop into the Girard Avenue spot to enjoy five pork carnitas tacos for just $1 each (they’re usually $3.50 a pop).
