Flash Poll: Who Makes the Best Pizza in South Philly?By Danya Henninger | July 16, 2014 By Danya Henninger | July 16, 2014
Who makes the best pizza in South Philly? It’s an important question, and one that’s not easy to answer, because South Philadelphia pies run the gamut in pizza style. Charred crust 16-inchers at Slice, wood-fired rounds at Gennaro's Tomato Pie and the unique American cheese-banana pepper “Pizazz” at Cacia’s all have their merits.
You’ll get a chance to help decide whose slice comes out on top at the sixth annual South Philly Pizza Olympics.
Produced by the South Philly Review, the pizza extravaganza will take over Penn’s Landing Caterers on Columbus Boulevard from 6-9 PM on Thursday, July 17. Tickets are just $15 (here; also available at the door) and include samples from the 15 competitors, Utz potato chips, Coca-Cola and entertainment — the Mummers will perform. Drinks specials will also be available throughout the night.
At the end of the evening, winners will be announced in the following categories:
- Best Crust
- Best Veggie
- Best Creative Toppings
- Best White
- Favorite Sicilian
- Top Tomato Pie
- Best Sauce
This year, a few contestants from elsewhere in the city join the South Philly natives. Out of the participating pizzerias below, who do you think makes the best pie?
