Free Tacos for Union Taco’s Launch on Girard Avenue
Give one up for chef Nick Farina - he’s not only opening a restaurant on time, he’s doing it in friendly style by giving away free samples on the first day. Union Taco will open for business on Wednesday, October 23, and when the doors are unlocked at noon, customers will be treated to free tacos, available through 2 PM.
The taqueria is the second restaurant for Farina, who also owns Verdad tequila bar in Bryn Mawr. Set in the former home of Tiffin:etc. at 712 West Girard, the taqueria will serve lunch and dinner, and eventually stay open late on weekends. (It’s just outside the comfort zone for partiers leaving Northern Liberties hotspots, but the promise of great post-bar tacos could be enough of a draw to bring folks a few extra blocks west.)
Look for tacos, tortas and Mexican flatbread pizzas - we got a preview of one with duck, goat cheese and pineapple last month and it was on point - all priced $12 and under. Served on housemade tortillas, tacos are two for $6 and will come with creative filling combos like oxtail with cabrales cheese and pickled jicama, or pork carnitas with chipotle BBQ sauce and pomegranate. Any of those fillings can also be put on a locally-sourced roll and pressed into a torta.
Other bites include chorizo cheese fries and several flavors of guacamole, including a strawberry-habanero version. Churros with spicy chocolate dipping sauce are served by the bag for dessert ($3), and Mexican sodas and BYO margarita mixes make up the beverage list. Behind floor-to-ceiling front windows, the interior has space for 20 sit-down guests.
Farina is going for a Southern California feel for his new joint (he specifically names San Diego as a model), offering upscale cuisine at an affordable price. To start, Union Taco will be open 11:30 AM-10 PM, Tuesday-Thursday, 11:30 AM-11 PM, Friday-Saturday and 11:30 AM-9 PM, Sunday.
