It’s rare to see a chef this giddy, but Eli Kulp just can’t contain his excitement about High Street on Market, which opens today after an impressively quick three-week turnaround. The former Fork:etc - next door to Ellen Yin and Roberto Sella’s Old City mainstay Fork - has been reincarnated as a gourmet counter-service cafe, bakery and sandwich shop.
Judging from all the tweeted, Vined and Instagrammed images Kulp and associates have been teasing, the chef’s enthusiasm is understandable. Kulp has been working with pastry chef Samantha Kincaid, sous chef Jon Noodler and head baker Alex Bois (a Sullivan Street Bakery alum) to craft unique breads and pastries.
Initial creations include charred vegetable sourdough loaves; a caramelized white chocolate croissant with hibiscus and currants; and a squid ink bialy, which is topped with smoked salmon and peppers. Butter is churned in house, and sandwiches are made to order.
High Street on Market is open now for breakfast and lunch. Dinner service will begin later this fall.
