Joe’s Steaks Name Change Loses BusinessBy Danya Henninger | August 5, 2013 By Danya Henninger | August 5, 2013
At the beginning of spring, owner Joe Groh did the right thing: he changed the name of his Northeast cheesesteak favorite from “Chink’s” to “Joe’s.” Though the shop had been known as Chink’s for 50 years, some found the name offensive due to its connections with the racial slur.
Instead of being repaid with kudos, however, Groh met with outcry and opposition from Philadelphians who took offense at any change to a longtime classic, even for a good reason. In the Philadelphia Daily News today, Stu Bykofsky chats with the chagrinned owner, who reveals that business was down 10% in June and down 15% in July.
No good deed goes unpunished, indeed. The solution? Get out to Torresdale Avenue and start eating some steaks! (Even the Samboni Boys will tell you Joe’s Steaks & Soda serves the best cheesesteak in Philly.) Spread the word.
