Megaceleb chef Rick Bayless is opening his first East Coast restaurant, the Daily Pennsylvanian reports, and it’s coming to the ARCH building on the University of Pennsylvanian’s Locust Walk. Bayless’ Chicagoland empire is centered around Mexican food - Frontera Grill, Topolobampo, Xoco - so it’s no surprise his University City spot will focus on the same kind of cusine.
Called Tortas Frontera, the cafe is a new concept that’s only just been launched with outposts in O’Hare airport and Chicago’s Urban Market at Chase Tower. The restaurant will focus on tortas - panini-like Mexican sandwiches - but also serve a range of dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A grab-and-go area will provide all kinds of cuisines to busy Penn students and faculty, in addition to the Mexi-standards.
The building itself is currently undergoing renovations, so an opening is not expected until early next year.
