Pumpkin Market ClosesBy Danya Henninger | August 7, 2013 By Danya Henninger | August 7, 2013
South Street West pioneer Pumpkin Market has closed its doors for good. Owners Ian Moroney and Hillary Bor cite a 65% rent increase as the reason for the surprise shutter after five years in business. Their popular BYO Pumpkin, just down the block at 1718 South Street, will remain open.
In the past few years, South Street West has become a hotspot, with restaurants and bars launching in quick succession along the strip (see: Jet Wine Bar, Rex 1516, So Crêpe, Miles Table, The Quick Fixx, Kidari Sushi, etc.).
Moroney and Bor were among the first restaurateurs to give the formerly dowdy stretch of blocks a chance, and now they’re being priced out. Longtime neighborhood hangout L2 is also shutting down, according to Naked Philly, after two decades in business. Such is the downside of urban renewal.
