Quick-Serve Expansions: Ishkabibble’s and HipCityVegBy Danya Henninger | July 10, 2013 By Danya Henninger | July 10, 2013
Two local favorites at the opposite ends of the quick-serve continuum are adding second locations later this year. Ishkabibble's owner Young Ahn tells The Insider he’s taking over the space currently home to La Fuente Pizzaria (formerly Joey’s Pizza) at 517 South Street. The corner location is just a couple of blocks away from the original Ishkabibble’s, which has been providing late night fries and chicken cheesesteaks to tourists and partiers for more than three decades. An October opening is targeted.
On the other side of town, it’s healthy, vegan fast food that’s getting a new home. Nicole Marquis has settled on 214 South 40th for the second branch of HipCityVeg, according to The Insider. The space, formerly a Chinese restaurant, is just down the block from the Rave Cinemas and smack in the center of University City.
Expect the same concept as the Rittenhouse original, with several new menu items designed in collaboration with Rich Landau of Vedge. The new spot will have around 35 seats, making it much larger than the tiny Rittenhouse outpost, which regularly sees a lunch line that winds down 18th Street. Look for the veggie kitchen to begin operation around September.
