Like pasta? Love pasta? Here’s a chance to put your favorite recipe to the test and turn that noodle love into cold, hard cash.

San Giorgio is celebrating its 100th anniversary — the brand was started in 1914 by an Italian immigrant in Lebanon, PA — and is holding a contest to find the best pasta recipes in the region.

Dig up your best pasta creation, or ask your dad or grandma for theirs, and submit it here by August 28. One person in each of three cities, including Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Baltimore, will be chosen as a grand prize winner and walk away with $5,000. (An additional $5,000 will also be donated to a local nonprofit; in Philadelphia it’s the Caring People Alliance.)

The three finalist recipes will be put to the test in a live cook-off in each city, and the Philly one takes place on September 24 at an appropriate location: Ralph’s, the South Philly icon that is the oldest, longest-serving Italian restaurant in the country.

Of note, while San Giorgio is the most popular dried pasta brand in our region, it has slipped to fifth, sixth or even ninth place countrywide (depending on what metric you use). It’s also no longer owned by Girolamo Guerrisi’s Keystone Macaroni Company — after many mergers and acquisitions, including a time being owned by Hershey, the brand is now under the umbrella of New World Pasta, makers of Ronzoni and other noodles. Company headquarters are in Harrisburg, however, so there’s still a bit of local pride to be had. Plus, the noodles taste good!
