Outerlands' Grilled Cheese Sports Tartine Roots

Though it's the site of endless lines for weekend brunch, the weekday lunch trade at Outerlands centers around a lovely grilled cheese sandwich. The garlic oil brushed on the outside of the bread and the fact that it's seared in a cast iron skillet really help make this special in flavor and texture. But the clincher is the house-baked levain that's a direct descendant of the original at Tartine Bakery. Outerlands has been steadily drawing curious eaters to the Outer Sunset since it opened in 2009, but this sandwich offers an across-town taste of the Mission District.
