With all the options in San Francisco, it's simply not enough to say you're in the mood for brunch. What kind of brunch mood are you in, exactly? Use this mood index to match the feels you are feeling to the eats you should be eating - at the most wonderful meal between breakfast and lunch.
Weekday extravagance: Ever had a Benedict or Bloody Mary on a weekday? Now's your chance: Namu Gaji has made the arguably epic decision to expand its brunch service to Wednesday-Sunday from 10:30 AM to 4 PM. The menu has splurge-worthy offerings like bourbon challah French toast, loco moco and fried-chicken sandwiches, with most dishes priced between $10-$16.
Hangover helper: Spice up your life and sweat it out at Sabrosa, where brunch is served from 10 AM to 3:30 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. Main-course ($8-$20) offerings include fideo seco con camarón y huevo (fried angel hair pasta with tomato and jalapeño chile sauce, spicy shrimp, over easy egg, avocado and queso casero), bruselas con yema de huevo (sautéed Brussels sprouts, grilled onion, sunchokes, egg yolk, de árbol chile and queso casero), and chilaquiles rojos con frijol y huevo (tortilla chips in guajillo and morita chile sauce, poached egg, pinquito beans, crema and cotija).
You can't decide!: Stone's Throw aims to please all palates by featuring sweet and savory bites like pumpkin spice donuts, oysters on the half shell, butter-fried pancakes, butternut squash and duck confit, and a burger with the intriguing "everything baked potato tot." Service is on Sundays from 11 AM to 2 PM.
Late brunch: Worry not, for Delarosa offers weekend service from 11:30 AM to the very civilized hour of 4 PM. Pro tip: if you've got people in your party that don't want brunch food like French toast with berries and mascarpone or pizza carbonara that late, the full lunch menu is available at the same time.
A surprise: Dear Mom often hosts different pop-up brunch artists on weekends at 11:30 AM. The current rotation of guests includes Sugarfoot Grits (Southern specialties), Ante Meridian (black-truffle waffles) and Les Elements Patisserie (pastries). Check the bar's event page before you go to make sure something is happening.
Crust: Chile Pies & Ice Cream cuts right to the chase with Pie Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM to 2 PM. The carb-phobic need not apply to this parade of breakfast egg pies, fruit pizza, biscuits and gravy, mac 'n' cheese, pastries and the regular pie flavors. Pair your sweets with optional champagne cocktails for a double dose of weekend indulgence.
Late-night brunch: Itty-bitty take-out window Little Skillet gets to flex its cooking skills at the neighboring Victory Hall & Parlor, which offers brunch from 10 AM to midnight on Saturdays and Sundays. Little Skillet's specialty of fried chicken and waffles is the de facto star here, but there are also inventive bites ($6-$17) like maple-brined pork belly with eggs and creamy grits, a breakfast veggie pie, and French toast stuffed with cream cheese, poached pears and pomegranate. Cocktail options include drinks made for two such as the Wise Council (red wine, vermouth, brown-sugar syrup, cranberry and orange). Unlike typical brunch services, there's almost no chance you'll oversleep and miss this.
