Top Ontario Sommeliers Battle for SupremacyBy Robert Hickey | June 17, 2014 By Robert Hickey | June 17, 2014
The Best Ontario Sommelier Competition returns as some of Ontarios top sommeliers battle for supremacy in wine knowledge, service and food pairing. The competition is a rigorous test of knowledge, skill and grace under pressure. The winner moves on to compete in the all-Canada competition in Toronto in 2015, which leads to the world event in Argentina later that year. Canadian sommeliers are making incredible inroads on the global stage, with Quebec’s Veronique Rivest taking 2nd in the world competition in Japan in 2013.
The event will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at Oliver & Bonacini’s Arcadian Loft, in downtown Toronto with a unique opportunity for tasting some stellar wines. The day begins at 9 AM with the competitors locked away for a closed-door exam and tasting evaluation; the top three advance to the afternoon “action” round. What we're most excited about is the afternoon tasting, dubbed "The Greatest Wine Show on Earth", where dozens of Ontario wine agents will present some of their top Ontario and global wines for the industry. (Suggested donation of $5 with proceeds going to CAPS.) Wine Country Ontario will present the wines of dozens of local wineries.
At 5:30 p.m., a cocktail reception for Gala ticket-holders will kick off the evening’s 4-course dinner and awards presentation. A silent auction will feature spectacular wine, food and travel items. Arron Barberian of Barberian’s Steak House will host the proceedings. Wines for the dinner will be donated by Ontario wine agencies.
Gala tickets are $150, can be purchased online.
