Best Thing We Ate: Spaghetti at Bar Charley

Bar Charley has garnered plenty of attention for flashy cocktails, which include tiki drinks on tap and a “performance cocktail” that involves a cedar plank and a blowtorch. But how is the food at this Dupont Circle basement bar? Considering that it’s co-owned by Jackie Greenbaum, who also co-owns Jackie’s Restaurant in Silver Spring, and Gordon Banks, her partner at El Chucho in Columbia Heights, we had reason to expect great things.

Among the four small plates we tried, it was the spaghetti that rose to the top. (That said, we wouldn’t turn down another plate of the tender deviled eggs topped with melt-in-your-mouth fried oysters.) Now, we realize that spaghetti doesn’t sound like the most exciting dish, but this house-made pasta with salt cod, burrata, stewed tomatoes and bread crumbs stood out for its perfect-textured noodles and comforting flavors.

The month-old restaurant still doesn’t serve dessert or coffee. But when it’s all washed down with a gingery Suffering Bastard on tap, you’ll understand why Greenbaum and Banks call this the place where they’d like to hang out after work.
