Best Thing We Ate: Kristen Kish's Snapper at the James Beard Celebrity Chef Dinner

Tasting Notes: We know 200 smackers is a lot to pay for dinner, but this was no ordinary dinner. On Monday, the James Beard Foundation’s Celebrity Chef Tour rolled into The Source, offering a succession of dazzling dishes by both local and national talent. We were treated to Korean panchan from chefs Danny Lee and his mother Yesoon Lee of Mandu; quail satay from chef Eric Ziebold of CityZen; steamed snapper by Top Chef winner Kristen Kish; a spicy eggplant tower (our second favorite dish of the night) from recent James Beard Award winner Vikram Sunderam of Rasika; cumin lamb chops by celebrated Szechuan chef Peter Chang; and a lime and sesame dessert by The Source’s pastry chef Duane Copeland — all paired with beautiful wines and a cucumber soju. Of all the stunning dishes served that evening, our favorite was the delicate and complex preparation by Kish, who served a perfectly steamed snapper with shiitake consomme and shavings of black truffle. Considering this is the second such dinner held in DC this year (one was also held at  Kapnos in April), we think there’s a good chance the series will return. When it does, we suggest you go ahead and plunk down the money.
