Sample Rickeys at Jack Rose on Sunday

By Olga Boikess | August 2, 2013 By Olga Boikess  |  August 2, 2013

Booze-hound alert: This Sunday, August 4, the annual D.C. Craft Bartender competition for the best version of the Rickey cocktail, goes down at Jack Rose in Adams Morgan. The public is invited, and $35 bucks gets you unlimited Rickeys from the eight finalists (out of field of 50), plus sandwiches and appetizers. (4-8 PM, go here for details).

Ever since the Rickey was proclaimed DC’s “native cocktail” in 2011, area mixologists have been riffing on the simple formula of spirits, lime, soda and ice. The competition features creations from Bourbon Steak, Buffalo and Bergen, Daikaya, Range, Room 11, TNT and Tryst.

But summer isn’t over yet, so there are still plenty of long evenings to sip Rickeys around town. Central in the Penn Quarter is featuring some 20 gins this month, and gives its Gin Rickey a twist with lavender/tumeric syrup.  While New Heights’ Gin Joint bar in Woodley Park combines a honeyed Barr Hill gin and elderberry cordial for a flavor-packed cooler.
