Weekend Planner: Home Alone Installment

Whether you're staying in DC by choice or because you already burned through all your vacation time, here are some fun events around town that will help you pass the time:  


The Gibson hosts a holiday tree-trimming party beginning at 6 PM on the patio to introduce its holiday cocktails, which will be available through January 4. Ornaments will be available for purchase, with proceeds going to Toys for Tots. A portion of tonight’s drink sales will also benefit the charity (202-232-2156).

Palena Café has implemented a new large-bottle wine program on Friday and Saturday evenings, when the restaurant opens small-batch magnums that guests can sample at varying prices by the glass. This weekend, Château Jean Faure 2009 Bordeaux will be poured (202-537-9250).


Head to Jaleo to take part in its Clementina Festival, which has been extended until December 30 to adjust for the growing-season peak. This celebration of the clementine will feature such tapas dishes as clementine gazpacho with scallops; clementine and fennel salad with almonds, olives and pomegranate; and seared clementines with caña de cabra cheese. Drinks using the fruit will include a housemade clementine-mint soda and a Sunny Side cocktail mixed with brandy, clementine and lemon juices and Pedro Ximenez sherry (Penn Quarter, 202-628-7949; Bethesda, 301-913-0003; Crystal City, 703- 413-8181).


If you’re flying solo this holiday season, Bar Pilar hosts a $25 “Home Alone - Pilar Alone” dinner from 6-9 PM. The all-you-can-eat buffet of kung pao pork, tempura veggies, house pizza bagels and deep-fried PB&J - among other things - should be just the thing to get you out of the house. Mintwood Place is normally closed on Mondays, but this Monday it will open for dinner from 5:30-10 PM. Wow your out-of-town guests with chef Cedric Maupillier’s tagliatelle bolognese, hanger steak frites and deviled pickled eggs (202-234-6732).
