"It's hard to find a better pie" than those among the "great variety" of "incredible" pizzas (Neapolitan-style, "Sicilian, Californian, Roman" , even "gluten-free" ) that famed chef-owner Tony Gemignani tosses and cooks to a crisp in seven types of ovens at his "lively" "North Beach gem" ; a "brutal" wait for a table is part of the package, but a "motivated" staff keeps things humming.

Food 4.6 · Decor 4.2 · Service 4.6

The wood-fired pizza is "wonderful" at this "terrific" Mission Italian with "unique" , "engaging" service by a mostly deaf staff; visitors say they "value the challenge of communicating fully in a new way" (iPad or pen and pad are available), as well as the "quiet" environs, but the food is why they "keep going back."

For a "Bay area version of the cuisine of Southern Italy" , check out these "refined" "hot spots" in the Marina and Rockridge, praised for their "stellar" , "eclectic" wine lists and "fab" wood-fired pizzas, among other "thoughtfully conceived and prepared" plates; "informed" (if sometimes "perfunctory" ) service, "sleek" surroundings and "fun people-watching" are all part of the "sophisticated" package, but be aware that "pricey" tabs and "off-putting noise" also come with the territory.
Una Pizza Napoletana
Pizza · SoMa · $$
Food 4.4 · Decor 3.5 · Service 3.7

Pizzaiolo Anthony Mangieri is the "unyielding" mind behind this "authentic" , "back-to-basics" SoMa pizzeria offering "spectacular" Neapolitan pies from a massive, blue-tiled wood oven; trade-offs include "minimal" decor, numerous limitations ( "no customization" , "no salads" , "no dessert" ) and prices "much higher" than usual, but diehards say there's "real pizza magic" here – until they "run out of dough" ; P.S. closed Sunday–Tuesday.

Neapolitan pizzas are "so in vogue" and this "swanky" SoMa Italian stands out with "phenomenal" "thin-crust, flame-kissed" pies (including a "seasonal" option) plus antipasti and pastas courtesy of chef-owner Bruce Hill; "crowded" digs mean "noise levels are high" , but "terrific" cocktails and wines on tap appease, and the "build-your-own" sundaes are a hit with all ages.
