You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you visited Boston without trying one of their legendary taco spots.

Lone Star Taco Bar
Mexican · $$
Food 4.6 · Decor 4.0 · Service 4.2

Locals “love” the “small but filling” “gourmet-style” tacos and “potent” margaritas at these Mexican hangouts, which are “solid go-tos” for “delicious” , “appropriately” priced eats; the Allston original's rustic “little” digs where Western flicks play on the TV can get “a bit crowded” , but service is generally “attentive” , and it’s deemed “worth the wait” (the throngs are thinner at brunch).
El Pelón Taqueria
Mexican · Brighton · $
Food 4.3 · Decor 3.6 · Service 3.8

The Mexican street eats include “outstanding” burritos at these taquerias that “simply cannot be beat” for fans who contend the ingredients are “better quality and fresher” than the “typical” ; expect “Day of the Dead” –inspired interiors in both Brighton and Fenway (which is mostly takeout with some patio seating), along with “quick" service.
The Painted Burro
Mexican · $$
Food 4.3 · Decor 4.2 · Service 4.2

The “creative” Mexican fare seems “higher-end” than the norm at this “easygoing” Davis Square eatery offering “exciting” takes on tacos, tortas and enchiladas, plus “to-die-for” margaritas concocted from a “killer” , 100-plus tequila list at the adjacent Burro Bar; regulars advise “come early if you want to hear your dining companion.”
El Centro Mexican Restaurant
Mexican · South End · $$
Food 4.1 · Decor 3.8 · Service 3.9

For “reasonably priced” Mexican cuisine ranging from “quality” standards to “not your daddy’s” regional dishes, these full-service stops (which started with the South End “hole-in-the-wall” ) are a “required visit” ; some say that you may have to “flag down” servers, but add margaritas or cervezas to the mix and a “fun night” is all but guaranteed.
Chilacates
Mexican · Jamaica Plain · $

From-scratch Mexican staples, including tacos filled with spit-roasted pork and tortas with slow-braised beef tongue, are spiced with vivid housemade sauces at this small, upbeat counter-service joint tucked between Jamaica Plain's Stonybrook T stop and the brewery complex.
Casa Verde Mexican Restaurant
Mexican · Jamaica Plain · $

From the team behind nearby Tres Gatos and Centre Street Cafe comes this intimate, veggie-friendly taqueria that uses local ingredients to fill tacos, tortas and other Mexican standards with light, bright and vibrant flavors. The homey environment features gnarled wood furnishings, a white oak-topped bar and cool clay light fixtures.
