Chef Chris Shepherd helms two of the hottest restaurants in Houston, Underbelly and The Hay Merchant which keeps him pretty busy. On a rare night off, here's where you can find him dining around town.

The Pass & Provisions
Brunch · Montrose · $$$$
Food 4.5 · Decor 4.5 · Service 4.5

"Inventive and tasteful" New American bites are the stars of this Montrose multitasker that’s "two restaurants in one" – The Pass serves ambitious "gastronomic" set-course meals in a minimalist setting with an open kitchen, while Provisions offers a modern bistro menu backed by "restored gym flooring" on the walls; the two also share an "unusual and equally interesting" wine list, and there’s a happening bar area and a good-sized terrace, to boot.
Coltivare Pizza & Garden
Italian · Heights · $$
Food 4.5 · Decor 4.0 · Service 4.0

"Bringing freshness to the Heights" , this "fun" eatery specializes in Italian-influenced dishes, serving "substantial portions" of "expertly prepared fish and pasta" as well as salads and pizzas; the snug reclaimed-wood interior features an inviting long zinc bar punctuated with an open kitchen boasting a wood-burning pizza oven, but be sure to "get there early" because it fills up fast and "they don’t take reservations."
Kata Robata
Japanese · Upper Kirby · $$
Food 4.6 · Decor 4.1 · Service 4.4

"Excellent sushi and other Japanese delicacies" from Manabu Horiuchi and his staff keep this Upper Kirby hot spot "deservedly always crowded" ; the warm interior is sophisticated yet "feels very relaxing" , and there’s a tranquil patio too; P.S. during the daytime, the "lunch bento is a great value."
