Lively Mexican eatery with small plates
Mexican · Prospect Heights · $$
Chef-owner Akhtar Nawab (ex La Esquina and his own venture, Elettaria) brings his Mexican cooking to Prospect Heights at this energetic spot serving tacos and botanas (small plates) as well as shareable mains with housemade tortillas. Turquoise accents lend a breezy feel to the room, which has a black-and-white mural, light-wood tables and a mix of banquette and communal seating.

A gem in the neighborhood! It's warm and inviting, a great place to catch up with friends over dinner or date night. They take Mexican cuisine to a different level and it works very well. If you're in search of the super authentic, this isn't the place. But if you like the authentic recipes with a modern, unpretentious, twist, this is the place! I've eaten here many times and can say that the dinner menu is just as good as the brunch menu. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but the steak tacos and the lamb ribs are two of my favorites. Cocktails are very well crafted as well.

Unbelievably delicious steak sandwich, steak tacos, everything is delicious actually. Brunch special with unlimited drinks for an hour. New favorite restaurant in Prospect Heights!

The food here is superb (not everything, but in general a real gem, and just far enough off 'typical'). And our server was terrific. I SO want to give this place 5 stars. But I can't. Here's why: Upon arrival, we were told our table was still occupied. Ok, that happens. The manager who "greeted" us refused to seat us at either of the two open two-tops because he had other plans for them. Did he apologize? Buy us a drink? Anything? No. In fact, he was arrogant about the situation ("you know, sometimes people stay longer than you plan"). Awful, right? But compare that flexible mindset to his inflexible refusal to give us a table that he'd previously reserved for someone else. MINDS BLOWN. Seriously, this was so badly handled that the 4 stars are about three more than I want to give. But ... You know, other than this one moron, the place was great. And our server tipped us off: he's only there to ruin things Thursday though Saturday.
