Sophisticated New American eatery

The Zagat Review
An “oasis of calm” in Times Square, Charlie Palmer’s “classy” flagship “sets the bar” with “exquisite” New American fare “presented like art” by a staff “with finesse” ; the “beautiful” , “modern” dining room is a natural for “special occasions” and while dinner tabs are “over-the-top” , lunch is a relative “bargain.”

Went for an early dinner on a Friday night in October with my husband. We had been walking around midtown and Times Square and checked out the menu. This is in a touristy area but it's not a chain restaurant. The menu tempted us and we were not disappointed with a shrimp pasta and a burger and fries. It was very busy so we sat at the bar. The decor was edgy and hi-end modern and there was a private dining room in addition to many tables. The very extensive wine collection is upstairs and visible to the dining area through glass walls. We would go again next time we're in town.

I had the pleasure of the executive chef's demonstration class about a month ago and based on the impressive meal he put out, I knew I wanted to follow up at Aureole for dinner. And it did not disappoint. The dishes are creative, but not solely for creative's sake. They are thoughtful, balanced, and packed with flavor. I had the venison loin and it was simply outstanding. The service was top notch and the Liberty room is spacey and comfortable. It's not an inexpensive dinner, but you certainly get what you pay for. I will be returning.

Came for the theater prix fixe, $55. Food was acceptably good, service was good, and the setting was good. While everything was "good," at this price point I'd expect everything to be "great" or "excellent." As such, if you need a classy pre-theater joint, Aureole is "good."
