Barnaby's Cafe
Quirky spot for American comfort chow

The Zagat Review
Serving “huge portions” of “American food done right” , this local chain with a “relaxed” , “neighborhood” vibe offers a varied menu that “should please just about anyone” ; the pooch-themed digs are “eclectic and fun” , and the service is “friendly” , if sometimes “hit-or-miss” ; P.S. Baby Barnaby’s in Montrose serves breakfast only.

The menu is hit or miss here. I've had some really good lunch or dinner items like the meatloaf and the fried chicken, and others, specifically on the brunch menu that were not so good. Last time we were here, I had the steak and eggs. The portion size was great, but the steak was mostly gristle and I left most of it on my plate. Husband ordered the bacon waffle, which was not enough food for him. The service is always good though and they do an amazing job with their seasonal decorations.

Hefty food portions. Nice atmosphere. I ordered the Hickory Smoked “Pink” Chicken. This is basically a half chicken - wings, breast, thigh and leg. It has a great flavor even without the BBQ sauce. However, they need to figure out how to balance the heat during cooking. My leg and thigh was almost under cooked while the breast was leaning to the dry side of just overcooked. The skin of the chicken was a bit tough. Service was great. I will try a different dish next time I visit, to give them a chance to improve on my rating.

Barnaby's is a warm friendly place to get exceptional food. Their meat and poultry are grass fed and humanly raised. I have not had any dish that I didn't' enjoy. A bit pricey, but you get what you pay for - still under $20 per plate. There is a children's menu and if you want comfort food, mac n cheese or delicious soup are offered. They have beer and wine as well. They cook to order, so if you want med/well or well done - be prepared to wait for it. You are never rushed, even when they are busy. Being so close to downtown, it is busy during the lunch break. Breakfast on Sat. and Sun. only. An excellent staff at the Grays location, my fav. There are over five locations - and counting.
