This “upscale” Midtown New American from Alex Guarnaschelli offers “creatively prepared” dishes in a “striking” subterranean space; the “bustling” scene is “cool” for the area, even if it's a “business” crowd.

The food here is truly spectacular. Everything from the bread to the dessert was delicious. The Mac and cheese gnocchi, pot roast, and pineapple upside down cake were particularly memorable bites. The atmosphere is chic and fun. The staff were very friendly. The price is a bit steep but it's absolutely worth it.

Staff was soooo attentive. I felt like I had my own personal assistant. The roasted chicken was the best chicken of my life. I never thought I would want to repeat a restaurant in New York because there are so many of them - but if I visit NYC again I will without a doubt go back to Butter!

Four of us ate. It was good fare and decent service at high NY prices. We had a chicken, a salmon, and a steak dinner with the mac&cheese and squash appetizers. Decent staples? Yes. Mind blowing? No. $500 tab included 2 moderate bottles of wine and tip.
