Modern takes on American comfort food
American · Carroll Gardens · $$
The Zagat Review
“Still going strong” , this “sunny” Carroll Gardens “stalwart” supplies “killer” fried chicken and other “excellent” New American comfort food at the hands of a “gracious” crew; while often “busy” , it’s a “madhouse” at brunch when limited reservations make for “long waits.”

This was my first time dining at this restaurant after hearing so much about it from my other half. We had brunch with the family on a Sunday. We got here extra early as we did not have reservations and were able to snag a seat for four. The wait staff was very nice, helpful with menu recommendations, and attentive with coffee refills. The only thing that was perplexing was that our food took FOREVER to come out, almost as if they forgot about us. There were people that came in after us that were eating already. Eventually our food came. Despite the long wait, it was amazingly delicious! The portions were good and very satisfying.

This is a great brunch spot. Its hyped up, but it is well worth doing battle with the crowds to get a table. Service 5/5 - The staff was fantastic - prompt and considerate. A member of our party ripped a small hole in her pants on an exposed chair nail, and the staff immediately brought her a new chair, offered to pay for the pants, and brought several free extras from the kitchen. Food 5/5 - I ordered a short rib hash that was perfectly put together. The meat was tender and savory, and the eggs were cooked flawlessly. The house-made pickles and sticky buns were also on point. Drinks 4/5 - I sampled three varieties of Bloody Mary, all of which were very respectable. Their coffee is also good. In all, the drinks are nothing to write home about, but they are very good. Price 4/5 - It’s a little expensive, but comparable to many of the trendy Brooklyn brunch spots.

Group of 3 came for restaurant week 2018 and they didn’t let down! The place gets packed so be sure to make a reservation or come early to avoid the crowd. Very cozy place with one unisex bathroom can make the wait longer than needed. 2 of us had the chicken liver mousse, duck meatloaf, and banana pudding; all of which were dynamite. My friend had the potato and leek soup, chicken and waffles, and the pecan sundae. Our stomachs throughout the night were full of happiness and love which is just how they cook at this place. The drinks were not as strong tasting or alcohol-heavy as I would’ve liked but not bad overall if you’re into drinks like that.
