A dose of "old-fashioned goodness" , this circa-1908 Downtown "classic" "feels like a trip back in time" with "fair" French dips made with beef and lamb served in an "atmospheric" setting; critics claim it's "expensive" and "used to be better" , so its biggest asset may be the hidden speakeasy in back – The Varnish – known for its crafty mixologists, "designer" cocktails and "hipster" crowd.

The ambiance is incredible. You can either stop by for a quick drink or stay for a few hours and dine in. The food is great I had their famous French dip and it was perfectly made. They make incredible mixed drinks. And what appeared to be the manager was tending to us to make sure we were eventually sat. He's a very nice guy. I'll be coming back here for a date night guaranteed.

Just wow. For a place that has been open since 1908, you get the impression they have found a formula that works. You can't go wrong with a French dip sandwich made with house made bread and broth. Even their pickles are made in house! The staff is beyond friendly and the atmosphere takes you back in time like few other restaurants can. I most definitely will want to come back to this place before too long. It is definitely worth the trip to LA, even if you go nowhere else.

one of my favorite bars. cocktails are top notch. and while the menu isn’t exhaustive, the ingredients are simple and delicious. food is served quickly. worth visiting for the legendary atmosphere alone.
