A dose of "old-fashioned goodness" , this circa-1908 Downtown "classic" "feels like a trip back in time" with "fair" French dips made with beef and lamb served in an "atmospheric" setting; critics claim it's "expensive" and "used to be better" , so its biggest asset may be the hidden speakeasy in back – The Varnish – known for its crafty mixologists, "designer" cocktails and "hipster" crowd.

My girlfriends and I love this place. We have been here for brunch a few times and ordered the bottomless mimosa combo. All the food we have had is delicious and there are vegetarian options as well as meat options (vegan as well, I assume, if you order the veggie scramble without eggs or the Belgian waffle without butter). Michael, the brunch sever, is the best server ever. He never lets you see the bottom of your mimosa glass before filling it back up and is so friendly and hospitable. This last time we were there he even brought us mimosas while we waited for a table! Love this place so much.. great food, great service, great ambiance, all inside a beautiful historic building downtown.

I loved Cole's and so did my wife and two little ones. The kids (she's 10 and he's 11) both enjoyed the food and were excited by the history and ambiance. My son was delighted by the commemorative plaques over the urinals. My daughter loved the food and presentation. The wife and both thought the food was very tasty and well prepared. The service was excellent (we sat in the dining area, not at the bar), the entire staff was very friendly. Dinner with the family was great and we walked around downtown a bit afterward for a very lovely night out.

Good drinks. Good sandwiches. I keep oscillating between the beet and the lamb dips. They also have great tots and garlic fries. This place is in contention for the oldest French dip. Even if it is not the oldest, it is better than the other place: better service, better drinks, better atmosphere.
