El Gato Negro
Mexican fare with inventive twists
Mexican · Warehouse District · $$
If you "can't be sitting oceanside in Mexico" , this chainlet is the "next best thing" say fans cheering the "delicious" Mexican fare and "top-shelf margaritas" ; they can get "crowded" (the French Quarter original has a "quaint patio" too), and otherwise solid service can "seem overwhelmed" when "busy" , but "reasonable prices" help distract.

Joseph, Manager, needs serious customer service training on how to have a mindset of putting customers first, service recovery, and proactive leadership. Moses, server, is excellent and the true reason for an average rating. Food tasted good, but surprisingly lacked in quantity or volume. Overall, food tasted great, table-side service I give a 5 out of 5, and management I give a 1 out of 5, at best would be a 2 out of a possible 5 - 5 being the best score. Experience: last night a large group walked over after a long day of volleyball at the convention center. In consulting with the wait staff, we seated our group in 4 tables (2 tables of our kids, 2 tables of the adults). Apparently the Manager (Joseph) did not check with his staff first on the seating arrangement. His first words to us were not “Hello” or “Hi,” instead they were, “Since you just sat yourselves and didn’t ask us where to sit or check-in, we did not get a chance to tell you how we do things here. Now we don’t know which tables to put a check on since we only do 1 check per table. If you spoke with us first instead of just grabbing tables and sitting down, then you would know we only do 1 check per table with up to 2 credit cards per check.” Joseph needs to learn that greater than 75-78 % of communication is tone of voice and body language and less of the words. That said, as a Manager, that is also not the best way to approach customers for a first interaction. Additionally, Joseph should have trusted that his staff helped us sit down at our respective tables. Moreover, had Joseph asked his staff, he would have learned that his staff politely informed us of the 1-check per table policy with payment of up to 2 credit cards. At any rate, our initial response to Joseph’s surprising comments, “Do you want us to leave?” Moses, the excellent Server, anticipated well, moved very fast, and constantly checked on our tables. He is genuine with customer service, proactive with his decisions and actions, and has a kind demeanor balanced with a high work ethic. Moses can teach Mr Joseph a thing or two about customer service. His attitude (Moses) is the type that is hard to find and hard to teach. Moses definitely has potential. If you decide to eat at El Gato Negro at 800 South Peters, I hope that you have a better experience than we did, I hope Joseph received Manager 101 Training, and I hope you get Moses as your server.

The real high note here is the extremely large tequila selection and vibrant margaritas. The food is b- and service is backed up due to small number of servers on the floor. Overall good place.

Horrible service and food. This was the WORST salsa i have ever tasted in my life! Which should've been a sign to leave. Overpriced burrito $14 for shrimp that came with four pieces of shrimp. $4 taco which is ok until you find that you have to pay for each additional topping. Our server never came to check on us and our food came out at room temperature. We have been sitting here now for 15 minutes just waiting for our check. Server finally asked how everything was which we told him one word - horrible. He responded " Are y'all pretty much done?" and started clearing our plates. I would not recommend this place to ANYONE!
