Founding Farmers DC

The Zagat Review
A “love for local, seasonal food” fuels this “farm-to-table” chainlet where “big portions” of “something-for-everyone” American dishes (e.g. red velvet pancakes, bacon lollipops) are paired with “unusual homemade drinks” ; the rustic-chic settings are “always crowded” , and despite the “noise” , fans claim “you can’t go wrong” here.

This place has a nice vibe to it. I had a 6pm reservation on a Thursday evening, but got there a bit early and they did a great job accommodating me. I wish I could recall my servers name, he was engaging and attentive. Food? I specifically came to FF for the Lobster Mac and Cheese and Carrot Cake. Unfortunately, I did not get through half of either, they were both just average, no flavor or character to speak of. To salvage the visit, I ordered their sliders, which had a relish that really enhanced the sandwich and tasted fresh. On a whim I tried a slice of their butternut cake (which I’ve never heard of)…OH MY…5 stars!! the cake was moist, balanced, just the right amount of sweetness. It was so good that I shared with a nice couple seated next to me (which is why such a large chunk is missing in the picture). While I was disappointed with the lobster mac, and carrot cake…the sliders were good, the service even better, and the butternut cake outstanding. I should not have had to order (2) meals to get something satisfactory from an established eatery in a major city like DC, but I did. The portions were reasonable and the prices fair, when in DC again I’d consider going back just to get a slice of the butternut cake again.

It wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. Very neutral. This place was highly recommended but if we had avoided this place we wouldn't have missed anything. There are many other restaurants in the area with tastier food. The wait time was short, considering they said a reservation was recommended. Staff was nice.

Update as of 2018-Feb: I had an amazing experience at Founding Farmers recently! To my surprise and delight I was told that fried vegetables are no longer fried in animal fat. To add to that, I tried their new impossible burger (plant based) and it tastes amazing! The fried green tomatoes tasted great as well. I really appreciate the restaurants' efforts to listen to customer feedback and offer various options. I really wanted to give another chance to Founding Farmers as it used to be my favorite restaurant until I heard about their cooking method (see below). I am happy and hope to return very soon! Old Review from 2017: I was surprised and shocked to learn that EVERYTHING that's served fried at this restaurant has beef tallow/fat in it. It's disgusting and unacceptable. Especially for a vegetarian like me, it is terrible. There is absolutely no need or necessity that french fries or fried green tomatoes needs to be fried in tallow. What's worse is that there is no option that vegetarians could get these things fried in regular vegetable oil. I will never set foot in founding farmers again.
