Irma's Original
Tex-Mex fare but no menu

The Zagat Review
Offering a “limited” range of “awesome” Mexican fare and a signature lemonade, this homey Downtown spot near Minute Maid Park welcomes a band of “regulars” for breakfast and lunch during the work week, and for dinner on weekends; "be careful" “since they don’t have menus, you’re never sure how much you’ll pay” , but at least the “people-watching” is good; P.S. an early dinner is served on Astros home-game days.

I have been a vendor at the Quilt Show in Houston for ten years now and every year we come to Irma’s Original with a group of 10-20 people. Irma and her family are so excited to see us even though we only come that one night each year. One year our shuttle didn’t show us to bring us back to our hotel because we “closed the place down” after hours. So Irma’s sons offered to drive us all back in their personal vehicles. It’s true, they don’t have a menu, don’t give you the prices ahead of time and it is not “cheap,” we are never disappointed with the food, drinks, service and getting the opportunity for Irma to come out and greet us and take pictures with us all. She even offers some “free” dishes to try out. Our group every year grows and grows and we all look forward to this wonderful night at Irma’s every year. If I lived in Houston I would go often. I have recommended Irma’s Original to many people, even our customers who live in town. Since coming, Irma’s sons have opened two other restaurants in town. They have also expanded the space in the restaurant but we love being seated in the back “original” restaurant (and bathroom) with all of the eclectic decor that makes you feel like you are home. Thank you, Irma, for treating us like family every year. We all will be back! Matter of fact I need to make a reservation for 16 in your “back” room please, for Thursday, November 2. God bless you!

I was impressed with Irma's Original. The location and building are great - cool memorabilia everywhere. The lack of a menu was unsettling. But the choices are simple enough that it made sense once it was explained. The chips and salsa were good. The queso was small but tasty. And the guacamole was very good. We got the mixed fajitas, and they were very good. If you're in downtown Houston and need some real Mexican food, Irma's is a great choice.

Not Big Group Friendly! We went for lunch with a work birthday group lunch. We had heard some amazing thing about Irma's and we were excited to try Irma's out. Unfortunately the service was not good. Her daughter was our server and made us feel as if we were an inconvenience. We had advised her it was our first time so she could run us through how the no menu thing worked. Very rude responses every time. Food was good however I felt like we got short changed. We didn't get offer guacamole or cheese with our chips. Such a shame since everyone speaks so highly about it. Maybe 2nd time is a charm but it will not be anytime soon.
