Japanese small plates in hip digs

The Zagat Review
The Kizaki brothers "know what they're doing" – and they've "done it again" with this "spectacular" Sushi Den offshoot in Platt Park offering the same "incredibly fresh seafood" for which the "mother ship" next door is famous, alongside an "uncommonly" "adventurous" selection of Asian-fusion small plates, all "served with aplomb” – and sake – by an "efficient" , "accommodating" staff; meanwhile, the "simply stunning" two-story setting, featuring a "heavenly" upstairs lounge with a retractable roof, is even "better" than that of its sibling, "without the waits.”

My husband and I have made Izakaya our New Year’s Eve tradition and were very excited to end 2017 at this wonderful restaurant. Unfortunately we had a terrible experience ringing in the New Year this time. We started with appetizers and ordered one sushi roll telling our waiter we’re going to order more rolls.... we just wanted to enjoy our time. After 30 minutes of waiting on the first roll we had to ask the waiter serving the table next to us if he could please check on our order (since our waiter had not been back to our table). The other waiter notices we’re out of water and our drinks are empty, graciously he fills our water. About ten minutes later our waiter comes and informs us that he’s working on it with the manager and our roll should be up any minute (no big deal, we get that they’re busy and not normally open on Sundays.... it’s fine. But when you’re starving, even ten minutes can feel like eternity and he quickly walked away without asking if we would like another drink). We waited another fifteen/twenty minutes for the first roll, looking around noticing that there were plenty of open seats, didn’t seem too busy by now..... and still nothing. After being there for over an hour and only small apps in our bellies (remember, we came in starving because Izakaya is one of our most favorite places and we were excited to treat ourselves that evening) we asked if they could please cancel the order and we would be on our way. He was apologetic about the situation but when the check came, nothing was comped. We were not asking for free but walking out of Izakaya with no sushi after the amount of time we were there that evening was such a major let down. We’ve never had a bad experience there before and yes we will be back..... but we’ll take our time getting back there. We ended up going to Adelitas for tacos on NYE to fill the starving void in our stomachs.

Sushi Class at Izakaya Den was a wonderful experience. Master Chef Yasu was an excellent instructor. He provided the perfect mix of entertainment and practical and effective instruction. I recommend the class for all that appreciate Japaneses culture and love sushi.
