“Upholding the art of Italian cooking” since 1908, this East Village “institution” endures thanks to “no-nonsense” red-sauce meals (plus some vegan selections), all at “fair prices” ; no credit cards and “nothing-fancy” decor – think Chianti bottles and “melted candle wax” – add to the “time-warp” vibe.

New owner, introduced himself and was very pleasant. He made it a point to make sure we were enjoying our meal and having a good experience. We got there late, and there was no pressure to get us out. They wanted us to take our time and enjoy the meal. I suggest leaving room for dessert!

Great sauce! If you want some good old fashioned pasta in a cozy atmosphere this is your spot. Tables were a bit cramped but the waiter helped move things around and made us more comfortable.

Contrary to some reviews I read, the meatballs and Tuscan Pappardelle were exceptional. The sauce (gravy) on the meatballs was like a wam blanket for the tongue...was that too much? If so, it was my thought at the time. I only wish I was in NYC often enough to eat here every week so I could try everything on the menu.
